What’s Your EKG Program Called?

  • EKG training can go by different names depending on the institution offering the program. You’ll want to search all the terms associated with the field to make sure you find all possible programs. Some schools call their programs “ECG” training. Some school use the full “Electrocardiography” term in their program’s title. “Telemetry” technician programs are another variation on the EKG specialty. Some programs — especially those offering an Associates degree — have a wider focus and are listed as “Cardiology” technician programs.
  • EKG training can also be combined with other specializations, like phlebotomy, medical assisting, or (as mentioned above) cardiology. Choosing a program with a wider focus can be an excellent option for students who can invest a little more time in their education. Many hospitals and clinics need EKG technicians to perform a variety of duties, so adding additional specializations will make you more marketable.

Consider Your Options:

  • Are you looking for a quick, basic EKG course to supplement your current job? Or do you want to find a more comprehensive program to make you more eligible for a new position? More comprehensive programs will include Holter monitoring and stress testing.
  • Do you want to study in a classroom setting, online, or both? Many students learn better when they can be in classroom with a teacher so that they can ask for clarification as they need it. It is also nice to meet the other students, form study groups and begin networking. Online courses, however, offer convenience and flexibility that is of paramount importance to some students. If work and family commitments interfere with face-to-face class schedules, look into programs that offer some of their classes online.
  • The cost of the program is also an important consideration. Tuition can vary significantly between schools, so look into several programs before you decide on one.
  • What scholarships are available? If you are already working for a health care facility, ask about training benefits. Many companies want their employees to receive additional training so that they can promote from within.

Finding and enrolling in the right school will put you firmly on the path to becoming an EKG technician. You can be confident that you are entering a rewarding profession with excellent job opportunities.
